I think that Joan Crawford is a true beauty, however her harsh and exaggerated make-up, even though it created the Crawford image, has hidden her beauty from many people who would now call Crawford ugly. But if you look at her early films, ones with Clark Gable, you can see how beautiful she really was. Particularly Strange Cargo, in that Crawford has no heavy eye make-up, and no over done lips- just her face. And it really is beautiful.
